Introduction

Hello fellow Nintendo modder! Welcome to the Super Mario Galaxy Modding Manual #1! Modding Mario games is a very interesting and fun experience, but modding Super Mario Galaxy is the most enjoyable. You can create the galaxies of your dreams and explore them as the red-hatted plumber himself! Remember. You must homebrew your Wii and get both the Homebrew Channel and Riivolution before starting at all. But without further delay, Here's how to begin modding Super Mario Galaxy.

Getting SMGExtractor

SMGExtractor is a special file extractor for both Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, created by Mega-Mario. It's possibly the easiest way to extract the game's files. The extractor ONLY works for Super Mario Galaxy games. Any other game will not extract properly, if not destroying the disc's contents. First, download SMGExtractor using the following link. http://kuribo64.net/get.php?id=GlgBKNPEVZV99IFn Next, if you're using Homebrew Channel, just extract the apps folder to the root of your SD card (or whatever you use to load homebrews). Otherwise, find boot.dol and put it in an appropriate place. The two other files are irrelevant then.

Getting SMGFiles

SMGFiles is basically all the game's content. It contains StageData (All the stages), ObjectData, (All the objects, enemies, etc), AudioRes (The game's music and sounds), LayoutData (All the textures including the Startup Logo and the Pause Menu), MovieData (All the full-rendered cutscenes EX: the cutscene that plays when the Comet observatory turns into a comet), ParticleData (All the games special effects) and much more. All the text is located in files EuEnglish, EuDutch, EuGerman, EuSpanish and EuFrench for PAL Reigons and UsEnglish, UsSpanish and UsFrench in NTSC Reigons. I have no idea what japan uses for their text. Here's how to get SMGFiles using SMGExtractor. Turn your Wii on and launch SMGExtractor. Insert your SMG1 or SMG2 disc and follow the on-screen instructions. Once the extraction process has started, find something else to do in the meantime, as the process takes a while to complete. Once it's done, you can turn your Wii off and all. You'll find a SMGFiles folder at the root of your storage medium, containing all the files you chose to extract. Congratulations, you can now start modifying SMG legally! If the extract process failed, check out the troubleshooting section in this link. http://kuribo64.net/board/thread.php?pid=13698

Safe Placement

If you want to remember where you put SMGFiles, create a folder on your desktop and put "SMG Mod Folder" as the folder's name. in the folder, create another folder called "Assets" and put SMGFiles in there. However if you're wishing to use some of the sequels content in your hack of Super Mario Galaxy, create two files with the first file being named "Assets (SMG1)" and the second file being named "Assets (SMG2)".

End of First Manual

Well, now you know how to get the extractor and files for Super Mario Galaxy. In Super Mario Galaxy Modding Manual #2, we're gonna learn how to edit levels using a visual level editor called "Whitehole" and playtest your custom mod with the help of a SMG Toolpack. See ya then!

When I try to extract SMG1's files with the SMG-Extractor, I keep getting the "Failed to Mount the Disc" error. (I have HBC v1.1.2 and Extractor v1.0.) What causes this error?

You always have the option to use CleanRip to dump the image and use Dolphin to extract the filesystem from it. I prefer doing it that way.

Hmm, may be related to the format of your USB stick.

There is a great list of compatibility concerning USB-devices on GBATemp.

You could also use a program like cfg usb loader to rip the files to your usb, but you need to install d2x first. When you have the files, I used wii backup manager to convert it to a iso, and then I used wiimms iso tools to extract the iso. Maybe you just need to have d2x for these programs to work.

That sounds pretty tedious. CleanRip is really the easiest and safest method to dump the game's image.

No, WiiExplorer (not WiiXplorer) is better than CleanRip as you can select which files/folders you need and transder them to any mounted device!

BTW: I saw someone on youtube replace their PAL game with the NTSC-U version by replacing all the files on the disc. The Wii still accepted it and so did riivolution. Yes, that does mean you can pirate other games into Riivo, but just don't. Buy it legit.

Does it extract the dol, apploader and sys files as well?

Yes. It shows the partitions. E.g. if it has an included system update it would show that aswell.

Usually 0 is the game and 1 is the update.

I could provide a picture but I can't be bothered

BTW: It takes a lot of time to replace the whole game with another. And it is a big risk to do it with 2 completly different games. But nothing will happen if you replace a e.g PAL with NTSC-U of the SAME game.

1.4.3!?
Use 5.0 or a development version... I'm actually confused as to how you got that version of Dolphin, it doesn't even run Wii games iirc.
Also, dolphin's extractor is not the best, use wit, it will extract it perfectly.

I‘m sorry, that‘s my version of whitehole lol.

Just a small question to the SMGextractor method:
how much time should the „extract all“ take?
I‘m currently at about 11h and I‘m really starting to wonder.
For the first hour it showed filenames and the rest of the time it
just said „Dump successfully mounted, now dumping“

is that normal?

Edit: Nvm, after 14h I just took the sd card out and all the files were on there,
eventhough it still said „Dump successfully mounted, now dumping“.
