Today, I decided to have some fun with NSMBU and I attempted to load up Boom Boom and Lemmy Koopa for a double boss fight. I lay out the boss controllers in the same way as they were in 1-Tower and 1-Castle and entered the fight.

It didn't crash. Not exactly.


After Boom Boom's cutscene, the game softlocked. Well, I assumed it had softlocked. Surprisingly, it hadn't.

Boom Boom and Lemmy were holding their stationary animation for a full 55 seconds before Boom Boom's fight proceeded as normal. I have no idea what caused the pause, but I do know that the same pause happens in NSMB2 (only I couldn't get a double boss in that game).


From previous experiments, I had found out that you cannot stomp on a Boom Boom if it was not activated in the cutscene for the fight. Such a thing was not a problem for Lemmy, however. I was able to aggravate him with a quick jump which started the double battle.

Have you found any unused behaviours doing this? E.g. does boom boom interact with anything in 1-1 or does he act as a light source in the dark?

Well, Boom Boom wasn't a fan of turning around after he'd moved off the screen. He'd keep going until he hit a wall then go back. Or sometimes he'd just keep going into the wall.
He's affected by slopes which was helpful, too.
