- Both games have a similar file system. StageData, ObjectData, LocalizeData, LayoutData and SystemData already existed in SMG2, SoundData and EffectData were known as AudioRes and ParticleData.
- Both games use YAZ0 compression.
- SMG2 used BCSV files, while 3D Land's data is stored in BYML files.
- Information about levels are stored in Map, Sound and Design files.
- In 3D Land, scenarios are used to create the levels seen in the special worlds.
- ObjNameTable and ProductMapDataTable have been merged into CreatorClassNameTable.
- Some objects already existed in SMG2, for example ViewCtrlArea, BgmChangeArea and Kuribo.
- A lot of object properties from Super Mario Galaxy were carried over. ClippingGroupId, l_id, pos_y, dir_z, name. Obj_args, Path_args and Point_args are now called Args and they range from 0 to 9 instead of 0 to 7.

There might be more similarities that I forgot. If you know more, make a new post!

- Paths don't have these two control points anymore, so you can't add circle paths.
- Also, paths are known as rails.
- Areas are always cube-shaped. You can't make them cylindrical, spherical or hemishperical.

- Only specific objects work with switches. Most ignore them.

Well, yeah, that's always been like that, even in SMG. Since 3DL depends on ActorInfo, only objects with a specific ActorInfo file can be used with certain switches IIRC.
